Updated: Aug 2, 2022

Thank you to everyone who helped with Annette Calhoun’s Celebration of Life and the wonderful reception following. Her family was very appreciative of your efforts and it was great to be able to use the fellowship hall again. It was our first event in the hall since the kitchen fire almost a year ago.

The Spiritual Growth and Christian Discipleship Committee met on February 27 and discussed several items. They agreed to participate in the Mariposa Pride Festival this year with a booth or table and to order new t-shirts for the event. They will also be ordering banners for our property for pride month.

To help us learn each other’s name, the committee will be placing nametags on the table in the cry room for those who wish to wear them. At some point in the future, the cry room will become the “tech room” when the new video equipment is ordered and put into service and we will find a different location for the nametags.

The committee discussed our thrift store and food ministries. There are no plans to change the meal from a “drive thru” to sit down dinner. We feel we are serving a number of folks who would not be able to attend if they had to come to the church to eat and because the “drive-thru” is less labor intensive we are able to handle the increases in the number of meals served. Last Wednesday we were able to serve 113 guests a meatball sandwich, salad, green beans and cookies.

Our thrift store clothes sorting and merchandise stocking now takes place Tuesdays from 9:30 to noon and on Wednesdays and Saturdays during store hours. We have eliminated the Thursday morning hours. Many thanks to all who have helped make the store a wonderful mission to the community.

The committee noted their appreciation for the extra effort being made by the worship team as they and the congregation continue to learn and enjoy the new music. The team currently practices every other Wednesday evening as well as every Thursday and Saturday. Thank you worship team.

This Sunday’s scriptures are Philippians 3:17-4:1 and Luke 13:31-35. I hope you will join us in person or online. Robyn will be preaching this Sunday as she continues her journey to ministry. Here are the scriptures if you would like to read ahead. The full order of worship is posted on the website each week. Here is the link: https://www.newcommunityumc.net/sunday-worship

Philippians 3:17-4:1 Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to the example you have in us. For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told you of them, and now I tell you even with tears. Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; and their glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will transform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.

Luke 13: 31-35

At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, "Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you." He said to them, "Go and tell that fox for me, 'Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.'

Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, 'Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.'"

As always, thanks for all you do.

With love and appreciation,

Pastor Jim
